Overview
Semax (MEHFPGP) is a synthetic heptapeptide developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is based on the ACTH(4-7) fragment (Met-Glu-His-Phe) extended with a Pro-Gly-Pro C-terminal sequence that protects against enzymatic degradation while augmenting neurological activity. Semax has been studied in Russian and Eastern European neuroscience since the 1980s for neuroprotection, neuroregulation, and cognitive enhancement.
Semax demonstrates the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier when administered intranasally in rodent models. Its primary research interest centers on BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) pathway modulation. It has been studied in models of ischemia, stroke, TBI, ADHD-like states, and age-related cognitive decline.
