Overview
PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide derived from Melanotan II. It is a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist, binding with affinity to MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R. Unlike its predecessor Melanotan II, PT-141 does not contain the C-terminal amide group involved in tanning activity, making MC3R and MC4R agonism the primary focus of research interest.
PT-141 is distinguished from phosphodiesterase inhibitors in that it acts centrally via the melanocortin system rather than through peripheral vascular mechanisms, making it a subject of research into CNS-mediated sexual function and arousal pathways.
